eating habits

Question
I have an 8 month old maltese(Toby). When he eats,he will take  a small amount of food in his mouth and wander a few feet from  his bowl to eat it. He has a pattern to this. He will go to the right or to the left of where his bowl is(in the kitchen) and then come back to his bowl and get another small amount of food in his mouth and then go to the right a few feet from his bowl and eat it(usually in the carpeted area outside the kitchen.This will continue until he is finished. Is this behavior a dog instinct or is this  only peculiar to him

Hello, my maltese does it belive it or not i find myself saying this to a lot of peoples questions lol these maltese they are a funny breed!!! lol
Yes ! it sooooooooo annoys me for example sometimes we will give him some of our left over sunday dinner with gravy and he picks the meat out and takes it into out living room and drops it on our cream carpet!!! then eats it!
I tell him no and then pick it up and put it back in his bowl and over time i must say he seems to be getting the message. Thats all i can advise really to break the habit i dont really know why he does it its odd as he doesnt wolf his dinner down eaother he walks up to it and then walks away like he is thinking whether to eat it where as i know other breeds who will just non stop gulp their dinner down as soon as they are served it!
