Question
My 1.5 year old American Bulldog Ivory isn't well. He's been to 3 vets and I'm trying not to have him euthanized tomorrow.

Since he started teething he suffered from diarrhea. It came and went for the first few weeks but then came back and had a very metallic smell to it. Soon after I started noticing blood in it. I took him to the vet after about a month and he told me it could be food allergy. We changed his bowls to metal and his diet to sensitive stomach blends. The diarrhea has persisted ever since. I switched him to soft food about 4 months ago after trying several diets without help. Other trips to the vet were fruitless. According to the myriad of tests he's had ran his white blood cells were a little high and his stool tests always come back negative for anything abnormal, besides the blood.

He frequently has blood in his stool and there's usually ALOT of it. They say "It might seem like alot" but they aren't seeing his "crime scenes" where it looks like someone was beaten to death.

Now he's lost all his weight and muscle tone, he looks like a skeleton. He stays depressed and has a saunter when he walks as if his stomach hurts. Whenever he sneaks around and eats kibble now it cuts up his innards and he bleeds.

I've been trying the boiled chicken and rice diet now for about 2 weeks with no improvement. I've also tried pancreatic enzyme supplement in case EPI was the problem.

He's been on metronadizole, sulfasalizine, endosorb, prednisolone, etc. Nothing helps. Before I take my best friend to be killed tomorrow I'm dying to know what we could all be missing. My 2 other dogs living in close quarters are healthy as can be.

Answer
I am so sorry you and your dog have gone through all this. However, I don't have anything to offer that might make a difference at this point in time. The only thing I can think of is giardia but I'm sure your vet has looked for that already. It is very hard to detect, but the metronadizole should have taken care of it.

The only way you can know for sure what has caused this is to have a necropsy done when your dog is euthanized. That might give you some peace in knowing you did everything you could for him.  Again, my deepest sympathies.
