golden retriever hip dysplasi

Question
I have a 6 month old golden retriever. He was diagnosed wit severe hip dysplasia last week (I have the x-rays in my possession for a 2nd opinion). It looks I have 2 alternatives, surgery, which I cannot afford, or put the dog to sleep, something I cannot even think about, I love him too much.
I'm giving him 2 aspirins a day as per my vet, and I bought in WalMart joint maintenance from Hartz, which I give also twice a day.
Is there anything else I can do? He is deteriorating day a day, it is getting very difficult for him to stand up from a sitting position or laying down. I don't know if he is pain.  He is the best dog I've ever had. Please help me.

Answer
Hi Laura -

I apologize for my late reply, I was having problems with my computer and could not access my email to reply.

I am sorry to hear of your pet's condition. I too have a Golden Retriever and know how dear they are and what wonderful compaions they make.

Hip dysplasia is common in Retrievers, all breeds but it is sad to hear of a puppy suffering from it at such a young age.

First off, watch the aspirin, too much can lead to more difficulties. The aspirin debate has been ongoing for years between vets and whether they should or should not adminsiter it to dogs. Most health stores sell a "dog aspirin" which is more gentle on the stomach then human aspirin.

There is a supplement called SOD with Boswellia that works great on pain. You can find this is some health stores but it all depends on where you live. You can order it online from a variety of retailers at a reasonable cost. I have many clients who have used this supplement with there pets with excellent results.

I am leary of "Joint Maintenance by Hartz". Some of my clients have had better responses from their pets by using the human brands of Glucosamine Chondriotin rather then the pet brands. Since your puppies condition is severe you may want to consider a human supplement. Follow the directions on the bottle, whether it is a liquid or capsule form. You can sprinkle both over his food and he should eat it.

There are other supplements that can assist with joint disabilities too such as SAM-e. This supplement will actually help repair joints and will help retard osteoarthritis and deterioration of bone. You can also purchase this at a health food store. Since your puppy is small, only give him half of the dosage that is recommended on the bottle.

If pain and swelling are a concern, I offer a remedy to help increase circulation to a specific area of the body. It is called "Circulation Aid Herbal Tonic". I have used this with many of my clients and it been amazing how well and fast it works. I have a few horse clients that have suffered from Laminits and Navicular and theis tonic has really helped. I also have had human clients that suffer from severe arthritis that apply this tonic to their joints and have saw improvements as well. I would recommend something like this if their is swelling and you want to reduce it. This tonic contains Cayenne peppers and should not be administered if you or your pet have an allergy to peppers. You can view my tonic at www.localharvest.org/store/M10524 as well as my full line of herbal remedies and natural products.

I hope this information has helped you and your pet. Please keep me posted on your pet's condition. From one Golden Retriever lover to another - you are both in my prayers.

Best wishes and peaceful blessings -
