Garter Snake?

Is it a garter snake? Can you help me identify this snake? I left a picture I took of me holding it in a fish bowl. What does it eat, and can you tell if it is a boy or girl? Thank you in advance!

Melanie, my best guess based on the head and the two stripes going down it's back is a Northern red-bellied snake. If that is what it is it eats basically what you provided for it. If it doesn't eat within 5-7 days let it go, as many of the smaller species of snakes simply will not eat in captivity. I cannot tell sex by a picture. Good Luck, B
