Guinea pigs urine

Question
We just got our first guinea pig and I'm not familiar with what color his urine should be.  It's very dark rusty orange.  He doen't care for the oranges I've offered him or his chewable Vitamin C pill so I don't think that's what's causing it.  If it's not normal to be so dark, could it be a lack of Vitamin C?  Thank you for any help you can give me! Cheryl

Answer
Hi Cheryl.  Guinea pig wee is normally a clear or white and milky opaque colour.  It shouldn't be dark and orange/red in colour; this can indicate an infection of the bladder or kidneys.  I think it would be wise to get your vet to check it out.
Guineas should be getting daily amounts of vitamin C, 10mg to be precise but it's not so easy to measure out in food!  I wouldn't bother with pills, nothing can substitute good fresh food that's naturally rich in vitamin C.  Not so many pigs will touch orange,  instead try a variety of veggies and definitely some greens (spring greens, cabbage, sprouts, broccoli) which are an excellent source.
Hope this helps!
