a friend for my guinea pig

Question
Hi,

I have a male guinea pig that is about 6 months old.  I know they are very social animals and because of that I would like to get him a buddy.  I have heard that if I put a male in with him they will fight and if I put a female in with him I might end up with some babies.  What would you suggest?

Thank you!

Answer
Hi Lynette.  Getting another male would be your easier option, as you'd have to mess about with neutering if going for a female friend for your boy.  When getting a new male it is best to go for as young a pig as possible because this way you are catching them before they hit any serious dominance stage.  A young one under 6 months should be your target.  And when you've got your new pig, how you introduce the two is the next crucial element as to the success of the pairing.  Always introduce on neutral ground, never in your current pig's cage because he will feel territorial and will not welcome any newcomer entering private land!  Let them sniff and meet (which will include grumbling, mounting, sniffing of bums, squealing and nudging!)  It will be noisy and maybe smelly (if the rear gland gets going to establish scent).  I wouldn't interrupt them seriously unless they end up chattering at each other, chasing then chattering or swaying of bottoms and hair standing on end - then i would consider separating quickly as a fight may erupt next.
I hope this helps, anything else you'd like to ask or have clarifying don't hesitate to ask.
