Question
I had just recently got a new guinea pig to go along with my other one that is almost 2 years old. The new one is only a couple of months old. my older guinea pig has a special spot she likes to sleep in. when the new guinea pig goes in the spot my older guinea pig bites her ear. i dont know if this is playing or fighting. sometimes when they both want a drink my older guinea pig chases her away. im not sure if this happens because i didnt seperate them when i first got the new guinea pig. the first thing the older guinea pig did when i brung the new one is was bite it's ear. the fighting isnt really bad but i would really like to see them get along and cuddle. is there any way i can do that and can you tell me if it is just playing or fighting.

Answer
It's perfectly normal that your older pig wants to protect her territory. The youngster is an invader in her home and it will take a few days for the older one to teach the new kid the rules. This happens anytime a new animal is brought into a household.

Imagine if your mother suddenly brought in a new child to the house and the new kid quickly runs into your room and starts helping herself to your things. You would react the same way. Thing will settle down as soon as the chain of command has been established. The older pig is the current boss of the cage and as soon as the youngster realizes and respects that things will settle peacefully.

Don't try to push the issue.  Let them work it out, and they will.  It's just an adjustment period. Not all pigs learn to bond to the point that they will cuddle, but they will learn to enjoy each other's company.

Be patient. Allow pig #1 the right to  establish seniority. After all, she was there first.
