Question
My guinea pigs
My guinea pigs
hi Pat VanAllen,

I'm 17yrs old and i have a pair of guinea pigs..i bought them 2-3 weeks ago. I really don't know if my female piggy is pregnant im so confused..but from since last 2 or 3 days i have seen my female piggy is continuously licking the male piggy from behind every time they sit together. I don't keep them in the cage they usually sit on my bed and stay together..im worried why my female piggy is doing this from last some days. I have attached the image also to give you the right information.
Plz help and tell me the reason why is she doing so..i'm so worried.

Answer
Are you sure it's the female doing the licking?  This is commonly a male behavior when the female is coming in heat. They come into heat every two or three weeks and only for a day or so. A female will not respond to the male until she's ready and not a minute sooner. You won't know if she's pregnany until she's beginning to show and you feel movement. The gestation is 70 days, give or take a few days.

There's nothing for you to worry about. Even with two sows you sometimes see this behavior. It's normal animal behavior. They don't have a sense of vanity or shyness about them. They see no reason to hide from anyone when the mating season is in. Females will sometimes do this to other females as well simply because they smell the hormones. You may see two females mount one another, again this is hormonally driven and is not deviant behavior for animals.

If you're wanting them to breed then just leave them together and it will happen. But relax and enjoy your new pets. They're fine healthy looking pigs and should be just fine.
