Question
hi there my GP is about 4 mths old, male, no cagemates at the mo as my other one sadly died his nameis Azumi. over the past 4wks when i first started to notice blood in his urine i took kim to my local animal hospital who diagnosed him with a UTI and he was put on Baytril for 7 days. took him back as was still the same was put on another load of another 7 days they also took a urine sample. when i took him back as he was STILL the same the urine results had shown some abnormal cells and they kept him and done some xrays. the xrays showed up nothing at all they also took another sample and are sending it off for further testing. i am picking him up today and im sure they are going to give me more Baytril to give him, ( for how long i dont know ) !!!! he is eating loads as per usual, drinking and pop corning like a mad piggie that he is. I was wondering if you could offer any advice on the situtation as what it could be and what i should do if it continues ans i kind of feel that the animal hospital are just palming me off in some way. i cant afford to take him private as im awaiting an operation so in receipt of state benefit. i feel i am doing my part as a responsible owner and am still worried as he still has blood in his urine.

Answer
Hello Michelle,

Unfortunantly, UTIs are sometimes very difficult to get rid of and will take several rounds of antibiotics. Keep him eating and drinking and he should be ok in time. You should have him on acidophilus (a supplement found near the vitamins at the pharmacy) to replenish his good tummy bacteria that the antibiotics kill off. You can also give him unsweetened natural cranberry juice and that may help him out a bit. Some other possible diagnoses for his symptoms are pyometra, bladder stones, interstitial cystitis, arthritis, or spinal injury, so ask your vet about the possiblity of these as well. I'll send you a link with a good amount of information on UTIs that may be very helpful right now. Good luck. I hope he is well very soon.
