Question
we have recently got two male giunea pigs (Ant and Dec), they are about 11 weeks old and are brothers.

Dec seems very well although i never see him drink.

Ant however seems to tilt to one side when he is in his cage, his right eye seems to wander backwards and forwards.
we let them out to run around the house daily, and dec is very hard to catch he sees you coming and runs
but Ant keeps bumping into things and doesnt run away when you go to catch him, although he seems to get jumpy once you have picked him up at first.
i wonder if he could be blind?

Answer
Hi Karyn,

Blindness is one of the many possibilities.  If he is persistantly tilting to one side and seems off-balance in any way, I think the reason may be an inner ear infection.  This can be common in guinea pigs.  He could also be a type of handicapped guinea pig, if he was inbred, or is the runt.  In the case of the latter, love him the way you would the other, healthier one.

I still recommend seeing a veterinarian who is experienced in the area of guinea pigs concerning his condition, because an inner ear infection or some other medical problem that can be fixed may be the cause.  A vet can also see his eyes, personally examine him, and let you know if he is, in fact, blind.

Thank you for your question, I hope I have been of some help to you.  If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.  Good luck with your guinea pigs, and let me know how things work out (=
