Question
Yes it is a box big as a dinner plate.  The only thing it has deep sides that he can't get out.  Their is no cover on the box.  I was going to put the shavings in their.  That's a great idea about the lettuce. I will make sure we put lettuce in the box.  Thanks so much for your help.  Also it's pretty cold here.  It's been about 40 degrees.  I know they can't catch a draft.  Will it be ok?  I know in the car the heater will be on.  I just know they are sensitive to drafts.

I would make sure that you put a cover over the box on the trip to the car and then leave it at least mostly over the box during the trip.  Guinea pig pups are surprisingly agile escape artists - you'd be amazed where they can get out of.  If the box doesn't have a lid or flaps, just use another towel and drape it over the top.  Then, when you get in the car, just move it a little so that there's a little more air movement.

I do recommend using some sort of scrap fabric in the bottom of the box, though.  You're going to have less shifting and therefore less potential for urine soaking through the box.  You don't have to - just a recommendation from experience.  :(

Hope this is helpful.  Good luck with the "transition"
