Hi my name's rebecca and my guinea pig recently has a flu.....i brought her to the vet and gave her antibiotics. She got better but then flu again. The vet told me it's because I've been giving her antibiotics for the time frame given by her but I should try to extend to ensure that she gets better. She's better now but I woke up the next day and find her crawling......her legs are stiff then I did some research and found out that she's lack of calcium. A sort of guinea pig paralysis. But she's not eating....I really don't know wot's wrong with her. Pls help

Hi Rebecca

Did the vet make sure her mouth was ok for eating? If there is a problem with teeth or mouth this can cause difficulty in eating.

For the paralysis, you are right, every indication points to a lack of calcium. You need to give 500mg of calcium tablets (the one with added vitamin D) 3 times, once every 8 hours.

You might be able to get the calcium in liquid form in which case you need to give 1ml during the day and same at night.

There are two types of guinea pig paralysis. The above measures treats the type where one half of the body is paralysed, usually the rear legs.

If the above doesn't lead to signs of improvement within 1 day, you will need to take your pig back to the vet as the paralysis might have a more serious underlying cause.

also, if your pig isn't eating, you will need to syringe feed her so she gets nourished.

Answer
Hi again

If the calcium doesn't work, then the paralysis must be due to a more serious underlying problem.

Unfortunately, after doing some research, I can't find any particular reason why paralysis happens.

Sadly, your vet might just advise you to get your pig put to sleep.

Sorry I can't offer any more help.
