Question
Any experience with taking a car trip with a guinea pig?  Can't seem to find anyone who ever has done it, and I'm frustrated at the lack of info on the internet.  Even my vet was of little help.  Please let me know what you can tell me about this subject- we are 11 days away from a big trip and I want to be as prepared as I can be!

Answer
Hi Tracy,
the most important thing is that the guinea pigs have access to water all the time. I don't know where in the world you are, but where live at least it isn't that warm yet. So there is less chance over overheating. Still be careful if you leave them in the car when you aren't there. If its a long trip having a relatively big cage would be good. Travel cages are cramped, and if its a trip that takes several days it wouldn't be so nice for it to be stuck in there. Lots of travel cages are plastic that they can't see out of too. Will you be able to give fresh greens? Maybe you could pack some in a cooler or something...

The noise and movement could stress the pig/pigs. If possible maybe you could start taking them for little trips, just 10 minutes or so, so they get used to it. And make it a plesant experience with lots of food!

I think the book "An Owners Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet: The Guinea Pig" by Audrey Pavia had a little on car travel.

Hope this helps some, and good luck!
