Age of guinea pig

Question
Hi, do you know how to tell the age of a guinea pig? Because I bought my guinea pig not knowing his age. =/ I really would like to know. I asked the vet but I'm not so sure. The vet says under 4 months, might be 2 or 3 months old. But hes pretty big. I seen some pictures of a year old guinea pig and they seem like the size of mine. I hope hes not that old...=/

Answer
Hello Christine,

Size is usually the best indicator but unfortunantly Guinea Pigs range in average adult size from 1 1/2 lbs to 3 lbs, even among family members, so it's difficult to tell for sure. Guinea Pigs grow until they are about 14 months old so if your piggy continues to grow, he's younger than that. I would trust your vet. Unless you know otherwise, the vet is likely pretty close, especially if he's familiar with piggies. Chances are if your vet is saying he's about 4 months, he is likely under a year at the very least. Have fun with your piggy. Even if he is a year old they can live to be 8 (and on occassion older) so you should still have quite a long time with him.
