Question
We purchased a guinea pig (Fluffy) from Petland yesterday.  She is fantastic, but extremely small (probably the length of my pointer finger).  It didn't cross my mind at the time, but since we've gotten home, she has attached herself to my daughter as if my daughter is her mother.  As I'm looking of pictures of other guinea pigs online, I'm thinking she must be extremely young.  She can not work her water bottle so we've put a small dish of water in her cage.

Do extremely young piggies need any special nutrition or nourishment other than extra vitamin C?  She was maybe 1/3 of the size of the other piggies in the store.

Thanks!
Julie

Answer
Julie,

So sorry for just now getting back to you. Been working overtime at work this last week.

Fluffy, is going to need to eat Alfalfa Hay until she is about  a year old, along with an alfalfa based food pellet diet (which is any kind of pellet food unless it says timothy hay complete or something on it), That'll help her in her growing, as she'll start growing and continue growing till she is a year. Other then that there is no other special nutrition she needs.

When she is a year though, make sure she is getting timothy hay and a timothy hay based pellet as the alfalfa has to much calcium in it for Guinea Pigs a year and older.

I hope this helps,
 Take care now,
     Jules
