guinea pig broke its leg?

QUESTION: hello Mary,

last night as i was picking my guinea pig up, he jumped out of my hands and i tried to hold onto him but only got his hind leg and dropped him, he was squealing a a lot and jerked a bit and tried to run around the cage dragging that leg, it looks very limp and he is lying down on the other leg and can still walk around, he is eating normally and wheeking, is his leg broken or sprained? what should i do?

he seems to be eating normally and only hurts him when i touch his leg, he is still dragging the leg around, would it get heal by itself because i cant afford a vet bill.

ANSWER: Hi No it will not heal by itself if it is broken. Please Please take him to the vet for treatment and ask your vet for credit. If you cannot afford a vet then you should not be owning an animal!!

QUESTION: hello, i have taken my guinea pig to the vet and he has had surgery for his broken bone, the vet told me give him baytril(antibiotic), does that mean he has got an infection? how can i keep the stitches clean? he is also squealing when he poos because it stretches the stitches =(

Hi you can try putting a sock on the piggy to stop him going at the stiches if possible.
As for the Baytril,this will be a safeguard against any possible infection and might affect his appetite so make sure he is eating well while he is taking the Baytril.
