Question
We just got a new guinea pig.  He will be 3 weeks old on Friday and I have a couple of questions. First, I have read through a lot of previous answers on here and now understand that they need milk until they are 3 weeks.  I got soy milk, after reading that they are lactose intolerant basically.  I have been soaking bread cubes in the milk and he loves it!  my question regarding this is how much should I give him?  I don't want to give him too much milk or bread so I have tried to only give him approx 1/4 slice of bread per day, soaked in the milk.  He seems to be eating well, he is eating his timothy hay, his pellets and so far the only veggie he seems to like is parsley.  But boy does he like it!  We have had him now for just over 48 hours and he is really starting to settle in and be more comfortable with us and our other pets.  We have tried to introduce him gradually, but not too gradually as we obviously want him quite lovable and tame.  So far he seems to be doing well.  My other question is regarding urine.  So far we aren't really seeing wet spots in the cage and it doesn't look like he is drinking much out of his water bottle.  I have checked to make sure he can reach the spout.  There are plenty of 'pellets', so we know he is going to the bathroom, but I worry about his hydration.  He did go to the bathroom on me today (oops!!) and I found a spot in his cage that was wet on the plastic, not the bedding so I got a paper towel and wiped it up.  The urine had kind of a brownish tint, which wasn't what I expected.  Is this normal or should we be worried?  And at this age should there be enough urine output that we should be easily able to spot wet areas in the bedding?  Thank you for any help you can give me!  My daughter really loves her guinea pig and we want to take good care of him.  I am a bit concerned about being away from mom this early, but if we didn't take him someone else would have!  I just want to try to do it right.

Answer
Hiya
he does seem very young to have left him mother but if he is as happy as you say he might be ok. He wont be peeing as much as you think and he will be getting a lot of fluid from the bread soak.
Try him on a few cooked slices of carrot ( not tinned )also fresh grass will go down a treat but make sure its taken by you form an area where car fumes have not polluted it and dogs cant have peed on it. He will LOVE grass.
He may re-ingest some of his poops but this is normal and nothing to worry about. If you have any other concerns please contact me again.xx
