Question
My 1 year old guinea pig won't eat or drink at all! It ate a little bit today then stopped. It did the same when I tried to see if it would drink anything. A few days earlier my guinea pig smelled really bad! I checked to see if the cage was cleaned and not dirty just in case that was what was causing the smell. I gave him a bath so he, my guinea pig is a boy, would smell good and not stink. I made sure he was completely dry so he would not get sick but, I think that is what happened. I clipped his nails today just in case he was not eating or drinking because he was hurting a lot. I let him out of his cage so he could run around which he did. I am really scared because I think he is sick I don't know what to do. He also seems to have lethargy. I need help!! I don't want to lose him. Please write back.

Answer
Is you piggie sneezing?  Does your piggie have a crusty nose?  Those are two easy signs of an URI.  I am more focused of the bad smell?  Did you check for sores, wounds or ulcers (non-healing wet type sores)?  Have you checked his eyes?  Are they puffy?  Does "white very smelly gunk" come out him anyplace, even his bottom?  Please check for sores or puss - it smells as bad a garbage!  These would be signs of a problem requiring a vet and antibiotics or anti-virals.  Since I am not a vet, that is the best that I can tell you.  I am a holistic care practitioner for people and cannot make a diagnosis via the Internet.  Good Luck & please check out out every part of your piggie!  Cindy
