Guinea Pig pneumonia

Question
Hello, thanks for reading my question.  I have a female guinea pig, approx 4 years old.  She was diagnosed with pneumonia on Sunday and is on antibiotics and we are syringe feeding her.  I've got the vaporizer and vicks vapor rub and we're keeping her warm.  I've been giving her a little pedialyte every couple of hours.  She seems to be peeing, and maybe a bit of diarrhea.  Her breathing was very labored, but seems to be quieter today.  She is starting to make some sounds, but definitely not her normal wheets.

What can I do to keep her comfortable?  What would be some signs she's getting better?  At what point should we consider her quality of life?

Thanks!

Answer
Along with the antibiotics, Vicks, and Pedialyte, try giving her 1/8 tsp Robutussin cough syrup twice a day, this will also start to clear the drainage faster. Also to help with the diarrea give her 1/4 tsp of childrens Kaopectate, or however much she is willing to take. Other than that you are doing all you can do. To keep her comfortable just add a nice soft baby blanket to her cage, and wrap her up in it, then place a heating pad on low right under the blanket, try to keep her in a quiet area of the house. The drainage will start to clear when she gets better, and she will get more energy and start to walk around the cage, and eat and drink normally. If she goes on for more then 3 days with out making much progress, then it might be better to put her to sleep, usually in this situation the pig will either make it with in the next 48 hours, or will pass away itself. You will also have to watch for signs of an inner ear infection with pneumonia, if she starts to lean to one side, and is off balance, then it would be best to put her to sleep, otherwise she will always be off balance and need special care. Let me know if you have any other questions.
