dandruff?

Question
Hello, thank you for your last advice (some time ago, my piggy made strange grunting noises, the vet was clueless. you were right, I found out that the hay I used was terribly dusty, now I buy different brand and it stopped. I am glad I didnt use the antibiotics the vet had given me...)now, another problem. I have noticed some dandruff in his fur, not severe but the Internet sources indicate mites...he has no contact with other animals, his skin looks clear (no wounds or scabs) and he doesnt scratch himself too much... can it be JUST dandruff? if yes, what can I do? are there any other symptoms for mites I could observe? where I live, the vets are quite incompetent in areas other than cats and dogs (cows and horses) and there is no guineapig-specific treatment available ("take him to the vet" doesnt work). therefore I am dependent on the Internet...thank you very much

Answer
Well you are the first slovakian I have met who owns one and I work in English as a seconday langauge so know quite a few so i can understand your vets limitations. mites are the more likly cause, but it could be a skin problem in general. with mites eventually the hair shall start falling out but in either case i recommend this treatment:

A mite spray, ideally one meant for rodents, but if you cannot find this then what is used for horses should be okay but to be on the safe side mix one part water three parts spray.

tea tree oil, very important, if you cannot find this then i should imagine E40 will work but not nearly as well and it will have to be watered down considerably.

rodent shampoo, failing that baby shampoo.

first spray the mite spray all over him but be careful to avoid his eyes.

Next rub the tea tree oil over him.

every third day give him a bath.

repeat this for a week and then see if it clears up. hopefully it should, if not then please write back.
