Question
Hi 12 weeks ago I got 2 female guinea pigs, to cut a long story short one was already pregnant, she has since had 2 babys 1 boy the other a girl, they are just 3 weeks old i am reading conflicting things when to separate the male, i was thinking of doing it tomorrow but when ever i take him away from mum he cries and when reunited he suckles, i really do not want to take him away from his mum and sister so young please help thank you

Answer
Hi Teresa,

It sounds like your little boy isn't weaned yet and that is why he cries when taken away from mum. Now he can get mum pregnant again at his age, so watch him and when he starts mounting sister or mum separate him then. In the mean time let mum fully wean them both and then separate them. It is best to keep them together as long as you can without fear of pregnancy for either mum or sister. So watch for now just leave him with mum and sister until fully weaned which will be about another week and then separate them, or leave them together till you see him mounting mum or sister.

  I hope this helps,
      Take care,
        Jules
