Question
We have a guinea pig that seems to make a hoarse/wheezing sound, but only when she is squeaking her happy squeaks. Can a guinea pig lose its voice? She just went to the vet for a check up 5 days ago and everything checked out great. Her eating and activity are normal as well.

Answer
I've never known a guinea pig to lose its voice in the same manner that we do. Their vocal cords are different than ours and they have a more limited range of sounds than humans do. Since they can't tell us if they have a sore throat it leaves us guessing as to whether there is really a problem.

Guinea pigs are fairly easy to read when it comes to whether they're sick or not. The number one indicator is their appetite. Since she's eating and moving normally there's no reason to feel anything is wrong. This may be a temporary thing and will resolve itself. If it doesn't there's still no reason to worry as long as her appetite and behavior are normal.
