eye cataract

Question
Hi Lorena,
My 3 year old girl Amanda has been through alot. Last year she had a cancereous lump removed and the vet wasn't sure how she would go. I have now noticed she has an opaque/white flim covering one eye. Her sister Katie often appears to lick the eye for her and apart from that she is eating well and is happy enough. Have you heard of a piggie with a cataract or could it be something else.
Thanks

Answer
Pamela -

I have heard of guinea pigs with cataracts, although I have personally never seen one, so I'm not sure if what you're describing is a cataract or something else (which is possible.)

The other possibility is that she's gotten some sort of foreign object (sawdust, perhaps) in her eye and built up a sort of mucus membrane to protect against it.

I would recommend taking her to the vet and having it checked out.  I don't think there's much you can do, but its easily treatable if its a foreign object.

Hope this is helpful.  If you have any more questions, please feel free to contact me again.  Good luck!

Lorena
