More questins about our new piggie

Question
Katie,
Thank you for your information about our new cavy.  I will try your suggestion of removing "his" pigloo.  The store where we bought him said he was born on 10/30/03.  Should I start giving him veggies now?  The clerk, who has a piggy, said I should wait until he was 6 months old.  I believe you have better information on this subject.

I will try sexing our little cavy in a few days.  He has not squeeled or made any other noises.  I will take that as a possitive sign so far.  I want him to be happy.

The clerk said they like to be in pairs.  We are not quite ready for 2 cavies yet.  I have fallen in love with Tiger as it is.  I don't think it will be too long before we might get another one.

I checked out the sites you gave me.  They are GREAT!  Loaded with info and easy to use.

Thanks again,
Cathy B.

Answer
Cavies should start eating vegetables the day they are born. If you wait until they are 6 months ( most pet stores say this, but I don't understand where they are hearing it from) they can develop scurvy, a vitamin C deficiency. that is very deadly.

Two cavies is no more work then one, and usually having two helps them to become more settled. If you have a male, it would be best to get another male while he is younger because some, not all, males can be difficult to pair up.
