Our Piggies

Question
We took our piggie to the vet almost 2 weeks ago and he estimated 2-3 days before she has her litter. She still hasn't given birth. Is there anything I should worry about or is there any way to tell when she's getting nearer?
Also our male has been having coughing fits lately. Anything I can do to stop this?
Thanks for anything you can tell us.

Answer
Danielle, Ray,

My apologies for the delay in response.  I normally try to answer all of my questions within 24 hours, but I have slowed down lately.  So, my apologies again.  I will answer faster in the future.

As for your question, guinea pigs have a relatively long span of time during which they can give birth, anywhere from 63 to 72 days (although I have heard of them lasting longer).  Also, keep in mind that your vet is giving you his best guess.  Unless you know the exact day of conception, its hard to predict even a time span for birth.  Usually I tell people that when you can see kicking, you have 2-3 weeks to go.  Other than that, its just a waiting game.

Now, about that coughing male.  It will be hard to stop the coughing unless you can figure out what's causing it.  To be honest, it could be anything from allergies to pseudotuberculosis (which is life-threatening.)  Here are your options.  First, if you haven't already, you should isolate your male from your female (to prevent postpartum breeding).  Then, watch him carefully for any other signs of illness.  These could include: off feed and water, listlessness, hair loss, cloudy eyes, discharge from nose, weight loss.  If you don't notice any other symptoms, I would say not to worry about it.  However, if you notice other symptoms (including some I haven't mentioned), take the animal to the vet.

Hope this answers all your questions.  If you have any further, or if you need clarification, please feel free to let me know -- I will respond quicker.  Good luck!
