Question
Hi,
I have a pregnant 2 yr old girl, she has had a litter a year ago and has put on weight since then, will she have trouble birthing? Also two other two year olds i have have never had litters before and they were in with a four week old male for a week, is it likely they are preg? I didn't see or hear the male carrying on around them. Will they die if they are preg?
Thanks

Answer
Your guinea pig might have complications with birth, being two years old, but any guinea pig can have complications at any age.  If she had a litter before, she should be fine.  BUT, as for the other two year old females, they will most definitely have a problem birthing if they are pregnant, they will not die from being pregnant, but they could die during child birth (which I have had a guinea pig do - I rescued her and she came to me pregnant, and the birth did not go well at all).  After about 10 months old, a female guinea pig's pelvic bones fuse together, and it is VERY difficult for them to deliver babies after that, and complications will arise.  You should most definitely bring the two females that you may expect to be pregnant to a veterinarian to make sure they are not pregnant, and consult with the vet on your best options.  A cesarian delivery may be necessary for the older females if they are pregnant.  And you should definitely take them to the vet, because they might be pregnant, as male guinea pigs are capable of breeding at four weeks of age.  Good luck.
