Question
Today i was cleaning my guinea pig's cage and niticed that he now has large bald spots by his bottom. The skin looks a bit dry too. I have never noticed it before. I know that mange mites can cause Guinea pigs to loose their hair. Do you think that is what it is? if so, is their anyway i can treat it without taking the guinea pig to the vet? I mean, i will take him if i have to of course, but my family is tight on money and if we could do some home remedies first that would be better. Thanks.

Answer
Hello Stevie,

It may be mites or it may be a fungal infection. I'm going to send you a link to a website. It goes into detail and dosages for diagnosis and treatment of either. Be very careful treating for mites on your own though as it is actually a poison you will be putting on him and if the dose is not right, you could end up poisoning the pig as well as the mites. A vet is your best option but I can understand the money issue so hopefully this will help.
