QuestionMy Gp has had some crusty eyes for a couple of weeks. I cleaned them gently with a wet cloth, but I noticed today that they look worse and one eye looks a bit swollen. I happened to have taken her to the vet last week for a nail trim (I usually do it, but they were pretty long this time and I didn't want to make her bleed.) The vet thought that maybe the crust was from allergies, but I am sure it is something else. Wanted to know what you thought about the goopy eyes. Could it be a cold? Her cage is now outside, since the weather is getting warmer here in California. I will be taking her back to the vet, but wanted another opinion.
AnswerLeslie,
Thanks for the question. If your GP is a short hair, it could very well be allergies to wood chip dust. Vets seems to cling to the "allergy" solution. If you have a long hair/Abyssinian check the eyelids closely when they have a red/swollen period. Look for hairs that get in and annoy the lids. Warm clean washcloths/q-tips are good for this. A vet can give you special drops for conjunctivitis in GPs also. REDNESS is the key to conjuctivitis.
Another reason that the eyelids swell is lack of vitamin C synthesis. If your GP is getting a good amount of C and all other options have been exhausted, ask your vet about scruvy and how to treat it.
I hope this helps you out and good luck,
Ryan
