Running Wheels

Question
Hi

A lot of people have said that guinea pigs shouldn't be in running wheels because they can get their feet stuck.  I've found this product: http://www.transoniq.com/ I've got the senior wheel.  My guinea pigs aren't very big at the moment and are quite young.

I have heard that the wheels perhaps it can create undue stress upon the guinea pigs back and was wanting to know if this is correct.

Hoping you can help

Kysha

Answer
Hi Kysha,

The concern with guinea pigs and running wheels is that they are simply not designed to run for long periods of time - they are likely to fall and injure themselves, strain or paralyse their backs, or get their feet stuck. I wouldn't recommend using one.

Provide your guinea pigs with a run in the garden or "floor time" in your house to get the exercise they need. Being in a new environment (ie: out of their cage) will provide them with enrichment, too.

Jenny.
