Unfriendly guinea pigs

Question
Hi, I have two female guinea pigs who are about 4 months old. They are very unfriendly. It is very difficult to pick them up as they seem petrified and run and jump all over their cage to get away. Once caught they bite and scratch with their claws to get away. Therefore we rarely try and pick them up now as we don't like distressing them so much. I'm unsure what is the best to do with them. I thought they would get better with time but they seem to be getting worse. I have tried not holding them and just stroking them in their cage and one of them will climb on me if I have food to tempt them with but they will not allow any petting and do not seem to want any contact with us at all. Is there anything in particular we should be trying to do? Should we keep trying to pick them up or should we give up? Will they get any friendlier?!! Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Hello Jayne!
I know this story. I hope it dosent end like all the others for you.
Giunea pigs do this. They are scared of you and think your trying to kill them. When the flight attempt fails they choose fight. The nest way to at lest make them a little better is to be slower, and pick them up more often. Once caught pet them slowly well sitting still and talk to them in a slow calm voice. Also a friend of mine bought a piar of thick bite-proof gloves to wear until her giunea pigs warmed up to her, I dont know if you want to try this but it works. My giunea pigs love Darin (my husband) and I and still run and hide and kick and scratch and bite. I just deal with it. Darin goes to the other room, curses and trys agian. Not sure if cursing works for you, but it does him ;).
So in conclusion, yes they will get friendlier. Only if you try harder and more.
Remember, if at first you dont succeed, try, ty agian!!!
