Question
hi!!! my 3month old kitty and my 6wks old elliot are soon gonna be bred and have babies!!!! i also have a 5mth old named Lou Lou. right now the girls and elliot are in seperate cages. i will usually take them out on floor time and they all like eachother! THANK GOODNESS!!!! sometimes elliot will mount kitty and kitty will "assume the position" hahaha! she is not pregnant though. so today i put her in his cage just for a little visit and kitty was not happy. she was spraying him with urine and even biting him. Does this mean that she is just not in heat or what? Also since elliot is not at all dominant and is still very young himself will i be able to house him with the boy babies once they are weaned? i have built a C&C cage that is 2x5" i have heard that boys can get along in that big of a space sometimes... also in one of my recent questions i asked if a 6wk old male was too young to breed and was not sure of your answer.
thx
p.s i'll have way more questions about breeding in the future since you have been so helpful in the past!!!!

Answer
Hi Melissa-  First off, let me apologive for taking so long to get back to you, I forgot to put up a vacation message.  I'm glad something I said was useful!  It could mean that she wasn't in heat or it just wasn't the receptive time during the heat cycle.  As long as he was still persistent after she tried to bite him or get his hair, then he should be able to accomplish the mission...I experience that a lot of with the piggies and the sows usually calm down after a few days and become pregnant in due time.  As far as housing 2+ males together, it a situation determinant thing.  I would say 9 times out of 10 you are going to have problems, but it is possible that they get along.  The big space will certainly help matters, just as long as you don't see them fighting because they can get injured if they fight.  About the 6week old male.  He is physically capable, yes.  But he may not have matured enough yet to be persistent and keep at it when the sow is less than cooperative.  If you find that he is being very submissive to her and not trying, then you might try keeping him out until he is closer to her size.  It sounds like he has been getting down to business, so I wouldn't be too worried.  Again, sorry it took so long to respond - spent some time in Indy without putting up a vacation message.
Again, your questions are appreciated!  Don't hesistate to ask or send me a personal e-mail  astrathm@purdue.edu
