Brother and sister cavies

Question
Thank you very much for your prompt answer. I have another question.
The cavies I bought were 3 months old at that time. I am confused. The pair look so cute and seem to love each other. I feel bad thinking they have  to be separated. They are 3 1/2 month old by now. Is still risky having them together after 3 months? Why they haven't had babies by now?

Hi, I bought two guinea pigs at a pet store. I don't know anything of cavies. When I went to the store, I wanted two guinea pigs of the same sex because I didn't want any babies. The owner gave me a pair. Male and female. She said that brother and sister can't have babies. I have called the store three times to ask the same question, and they keep saying that there's no problem. They won't have babies. Is it true?

Hello Lorenia

Pet stores always have problems sexing young guinea-pigs so it comes in handy if you know how to sex them your self. The people at the pet store are wrong any male/female pair of guinea-pigs will have babys, put them in different cages right away because not only is pregnancy risky butshe is probly only 8/12 weeks old and thats worse also the pups would be inbred and inbred guinea-pigs offen have: missing eyes at birth/extra toes/internal problems/miss aligned teeth and offen dont live very long. So be sure to put them in different cages, if you dont have another cage you can put one of them in a large storage container for a few days until a cage can be bought. You can get the male neutered when he is six months then the male and female can live together again.

I hope this helps if you have any more questions just ask.

Answer
Hello again

It still would be a good idea to put them in different cages, the pet store you got them from sure sounds like the didnt know what that the maels and the female need to be in different cages as soon as the get them in (4/5 weeks). Your femael might be pregnant but she may not just put them in different cages and see how everything gos. If she is getting rounder and eating/drinking more then she is pregnant. It will take four weeks before you can tell shes pregnant (she starts to get rounder) and at about two weeks in she will drink more and eat alot more too. She is young to be having a litter and may have sevral problems inculding having no milk.
