Question
My guinea pig had a bad abcess which was drained by a vet. I have been instructed to feed her baby food by syringe and drain the site with warm water by syringe daily. She is sporadic with the eating/drinking. I am wondering if it is okay to feed her Nutrisse by Yoplait, the yogurt that is a "whole meal in a bottle". I wonder if it is more complete as far as nurishment than baby food, or can be used as a suppliment. Also, she was drained 6 days ago and had not eaten for a week prior to that. Since I have been feeding her by syringe, she has had NO bowel movements. I wonder if there is something I can give her to help her go. Thanks much.

Answer
Hi Rachel.  I would call your vet before varying your pets diet, just to make sure its ok with her.  So she stopped eating before the drainage?  Was it under her neck?  Tell the vet she hasn't had a bowel movement, thats important.  A lot of guinea pigs like yogurt, it may be more tasteful to her - haven't personally tried the Nutrisse.  Ask her about rinsing the site with peroxide as well - a lot of breeders do that too.  I don't want to have you do something your vet didn't instruct of.  Let me know where the abcess was and how large and if she's been drinking on her own - and any more info you can offer would help.
GOOD LUCK
