Pneumonia, Baytril & death

Question
Our guinea pig was 2 years old and was diagnosed two weeks ago with pneumonia.  We've always been good about taking him to the vet when he's sick and this was no exception.  The vet gave him an injection of Baytril due to the severity and prescribed a weeks worth of liquid Baytril.  After a follow-up visit a week later the vet said his breathing was better, but felt like he should stay on the antibiotic another week to make sure he recovers completely.  His appetite wasn't the greatest, but he seemed to be eating and drinking a little.  He would eat his greens and his hay and a minimal amount of pellet food.  Two days ago in the evening after his last dose of Baytril, he ate his greens and his breathing was not labored.  The next morning we found him dead in his cage.  He was outside his house in the corner of his cage where he died.  We were shocked because we thought he was recovering. He's had respiratory infections before and has recovered fine.  Can you help shed some light?  Thank you.

Answer
First of all, I am very sorry for your loss.  It's always hard losing a furry friend, especially after a long period of time. x

Unfortunately, guinea pigs are incredibly good at hiding illness. Most of the time once people realise that something is amiss, it's already been ill for some time. I know it's a shock to suddenly find him passed on when he seemed to be getting better, but sometimes their hearts just can't take the strain of the illness anymore, even when improving, and give in.

Pneumonia is very fatal for guinea pigs noce it gets a hold, as it is an infection and can put strain on the rest of the body.

As long as he was comfortable and seemed happy, then be assured that his death was proberly peaceful, as most guineas will pass on in their sleep.
