Guinea pig needs help i think.

Question
I got my guinea pig at petco last month and she seemed fine and sociable. Well, now, she gets scared and runs away, does the low purr thing which i think is a warning to "back off" and she won't let me pick her up easily, i.e. she claws my hands or struggles, but I'm handling her gently and holding her like i was told and read in many books, with my hand under her rump a couple fingers up the abdomine or support and hand under the chest. She won't play or do anything mainly. We have put her in our dining room, where most commotion happens, and taken away her house during the day, 'cause we thought it might help her not be so nervous around motion, but it hasn't worked. I can reach into her cage and pet her, but its hard to get her out. Any adivce you can think of?

Answer
Hi Dan

If you new piggy is eating and drinking fine we can probably rule out any medical problems.

Some guinea pigs just like to be handled more than others. If your pig was housed with other pigs, it might be she has realised that she is on her own now and doesnt like it.

If I was in your position I would persist in handling her and keeping her on your knee for extended periods (20 mins for example) in the hope that she will get used to being handled.
