Question
Ginnys abscess
Ginnys abscess
Hello, my daughters female cavy (4yrs) has an abscess.  I did not catch this earlier, I assumed she was losing weight due to old age.  I discovered it six days ago.  The abscess is under her belly between anus, left bottom nipple and groin. Caused by a wooden splinter 3cm long which I removed. It has burst and has an open wound 1cm diameter. when found she was 650grams. Since then she has perked up dramatically, up to 730grams and eating, drinking defecating well. I have been flushing the wound with saline solution, and gently massaging the area whilst she has her rump in a bowl of warm water.  Although quite a bit of cheesy pus has come out, and the lump is not so tight or inflamed it doesn't seem to be getting smaller as quickly as I had hoped, I would be grateful for any helpful advice?
Thank-you,
Sarah

Answer
I did not see that picture when I first opened your post. The picture puts an entirely different emphasis on this wound. Thank you for having taken it. My comments would have been otherwise inappropriate for what you are dealing with.

This is a serious thing, not just a simple abscess. It looks suspiciously like a malignancy to me. The depth and character of the tissue doesn't look like an ordinary infection from a splinter.

I seriously think you need the consult of a vet. She should probably be on antibiotics and may even need to have surgical intervention to debride (clean out) this tissue. I know this isn't what you were hoping to hear, but as a health care professional I find this wound most disturbing.

The tissue appears to be somewhat necrotic, and the visible swelling in and around the area makes me wonder if there's a mammary tumor involved. This is more than you should be caring for at home, at least until you get a working diagnosis.

Please let me know what your vet says. I'd be very interested to hear his opinion. I am so very sorry I can't help you more than that, but I think I would be doing both of you a disservice and probably more harm than good to suggest a way to treat this yourself.
