Question
hello, last week i visited a new pet shop in my town i was not looking to buy any more gps but i saw a small indoor hutch (only about 3 ft)with a large rabbit and at least 6 or 7 guinea pigs in it one was being chased constantly (and bitten),i felt so sorry for her, i asked the owner what sex they were and was told they were all girls apart from 2 males i told him the girls would probably be pregnant but he said they wouldnt as they were only 4-5 wks old(i thought they couldnt be sold untill they were 6 wks and i know they can get pregnant very young).i didnt want to leave her there and brought her home she was so small she looked smaller then my 4  wk old babies so i put her with them and their mum and she tried to suckle, the mum wouldnt let her though and i had to move her ,im worried that if she is pregnant she will be too small and young to look after them properly and worse that she might not survive the birth ,do you think she will be ok im very worried also how long do you think it will take her to show if she is pregnant.

Answer
Hi Marie - IF she is pregnant, you are right.  It is possible that she not survive the birth, or have a miscarriage.  It takes about a month to show if a sow is pregnant, maybe sooner on a younger/smaller female.  Hopefully she is not bred.  Give her lots of veggies (kale, spinach, the darker ones higher in nutrients).  Basically right now you want her to gain as much weight as she can to sustain the pregnancy (if she's pregnant).  Also, you can check around at feed stores and see if anyone carries a product called Calf-Manna.  It is made by manna-pro company - used with cattle.  It is like a milk replacement thing, but it is very high in calories and most guinea pigs lvoe it.  You could offer her a tbsp or 2 of it a day.  You want her still eating pellets, but the calf manna will help her gain weight.
I hope this helps!
