Gindy will only eat cucumber

Question
Hey Lacey,
We have had our Gindys for 5 months now.  At first they ate nearly everything we gave them but one day we tried giving them cucumber.  Since that day that is all they will eat! They still take there pellets but we have tried giving them other veg but they are rarely interested, they just wait for more cucumber!
They look very healthy and are bubbly and fun. There poo's are fine and they dont appear to have any other medical problems.
The question: Is this going to cause them long term problems?  How can i get them to eat other things.
Many thanks
Ian

Answer
I find your question quite amusing as your pigs remind me of little children who wants cookies constantly. :) Some guinea pigs just have a favorite food. Obviously, theirs is a cucumber. Have you tried fruits? My pigs devour apples, like you wouldn't believe! This shouldn't cause them any long term problems, because I'm sure they're going to get sick of cucumbers. It'd be like eating your favorite food every day for a year, eventually you'll get sick of it. If you wanted, you could take away the fresh vegetables and fruits, for a couple of days. Just make sure to give them lots of hay and pellets. Then try giving them another type of fruit or vegetable. Suggestions: Strawberries, carrots, apples, halved grapes, pineapple, coconut, spinach, tomatoes, lettuce, kiwi, dandelion greens, blueberries, cherries, apple tree branches, pears. The possibilities are endless. Your pigs may hate some of these things, they may love them. Honestly, I'd just take the cucumber away from them until they ate other things. I'd start out with small portions. Maybe one strawberry cut up, maybe one baby carrot stick. Also, try holding them when you feed them their fresh food. You'll get to know what they like, and it will help you  bond with each other. I hope this helps. If you have any more questions feel free to write to me :) I'll be more than happy to help. :) I wish you and your pigs a lifetime of health, happiness, and love. The best to you all!! :)
