Ginger has had a slimey discharge from her rear

Question
My sons piggy had a snotty discharge from her rear, I looked at her bottom and it looks to be a little swollen and the hole is opened. She was also very chattery last night, more than she has ever been before, we have only had her about 2 weeks so I realize that can be normal to. This is the first pig we have ever had. What could be going on with her? I was told that she was a female from the pet store and she is approx. 2 mon. old.

Answer
Hi Michelle,

It is pretty impossible to determine the exact cause without seeing your piggy, but from what you have described I would definitely suspect infection. The discharge very often suggests an infection of some kind, no matter where it comes from, and the fact that the area is slightly swollen may indicate an injury that has become infected. Living on poor bedding can be one cause of an injury in the area - straw is one in particular which has the potential to cause open wounds.
The only way it can be cleared up is by going to the vets as soon as possible.

A little off topic here, but I would consider getting a second piggy. Look at adopting from a rescue or shelter first as pet stores often sell sick, pregnant and mis-sexed animals. Cavies are very social creatures and most don't do too well alone.

Best Wishes,
