choosing: 1...or 2?

Question
I have owned two guinea pigs in the past. I am only 16, but am very serious about my guinea pigs, so please don't think any littler of me. I am thinking of becoming a breeder someday, but for now I am looking to find a new cavy friend or two. I have looked at several sites, and some say owning a single cavy is all right, and others practically FORBID it. I personally would prefer two, because I think that would mean happier pigs, but I am sure that my mother would not be "up to the challenge", although I would be the one caring for them (mothers can be so irrational! :P) I (and my mother) would please like an expert opinion on the matter.

Believe it or not, I got started breeding before I turned sixteen -- so I don't think any less of you at all.  In my personal opinion, guinea pigs are okay by themselves.  Yes, they are social animals, and two (if you have the room and time to take care of them) is a good group.  However, guinea pigs are pretty happy alone, too, as long as you take good care of them and give them lots of TLC.  I would say, in this case, that it is up to you and your mother to decide.  Remember this, as well: if you are planning to go off to college in a few years, your mother may end up taking care of your animal(s) -- they can live 5 years or more.  Or worse, you may have to sell them (as I did when I went to college.)  If you decide to get just one, I will recommend that you get a male (boar).  They are more even-tempered and if you decide to start breeding, you will probably be able to use this animal for a couple of years (females can't be older than 1 year for a first-time breed).

I hope this answered all your questions.  I'm glad you're determined to be a good guinea pig owner.  Good luck!
