Question
I had a girl tell me today that her male rabbit impregnated her female guinea pig. I told her it was not possible for the two to reproduce, but she insisted that she took the pig to the vet & he confirmed it. Is that true??

Answer
Hello Molly,

Guinea Pigs and rabbits are not closely related at all, so no, her rabbit could not impregnate her piggy anymore than a dog could a horse. Their scientific classification breaks off at Order. Rabbits are a member of the order Lagomorpha and Guinea Pigs are a member of the order Rodentia. In order for animals to even create hybrids (crossbred species) they MUST at least belong to the same genus. I'm afriad your friend is mistaken or she is teasing you. If her pig is pregnant, she has been with a male Guinea Pig sometime within the last 70 days.
