Question
Hi, I've been doing a little research into a problem my gpigs are having. I have two males, and they both have small scaby bumbs in a small patch on their backs. The scabs do fall off eventually and a little bit of hair comes off with the scabs. They are not attempting to are seem to be scrathcing. They do not go out side, and if they do they stay in my arms. Even though the are picky and refused to eat fresh veggies, i've found plenty of ways to make sure they're getting enough Vit. C.
When the scabs first appeared they were only one or two, and I figured that they were from them climbing on each other and playing all the time, (they hop and jump a lot). I fugured that they had simply injured each other when playing. But i've started to feel more of these little scabs and i'm worried that its either a fungus or fleas or something.
What should i do and what products do you suggest I use to get rid of these little scabs?

Thanks so much for the help!

Answer
Hello Shelby,

It does sound fungal. It does not sound like fleas, though it could possibly be mites and if fungal treatments don't work, they should see the vet for confirmation and an ivermectin treatment. Nizoral (a human dandruff shampoo) should work. There is also Malaseb shampoo. The creams Monistat 7, Femizol-M, Gyne-Lotrimin, Mycelex, Lotrimin, and Lotrisone may also be used. This may require a few treatments (bathe once a week for 3 to 4 weeks with the shampoo or twice a day applications of the cream until the infection is gone). If these don't work, they should see the vet to find out for sure what's going on and make certain it's not mites or possibly to get a stronger antifungal treatment. Good luck!
