pooping problems

Question
I just noticed a large mass of poop collecting in my gp's rectum. I helped him get it out, but his bottom looks swollen and pink. He is pooping a little better, but his botton does not look normal. Don't know if he's having trouble pushing, or if its an infection or what.

Answer
Hello Liz,

Sounds like your boar had an impaction. This is common in older boars (though it can occur in younger ones as well), especially if he is unnuetered. It occurs because as a piggy ages his muscles get a bit weaker back there. Make sure he has lots of hay all the time and this may help. Adding the supplement Acidophilus to his diet may help as well. You'll need to check him frequently for impactions. Typically it is a regular occurrence for boars who get them. A warm wet wash cloth can be used to help gently remove the impactions. Sometimes a bit of baby oil can help make the process easier. I prefer to clean my boars out in the tub because it makes a bit less mess. If you are concerned or the swollen pinkness doesn't clear up, it may be good to see a vet just to be safe. I believe it was nothing more than an impaction though and with a bit of special care, he should be fine but checking for impactions will have to become part of your regular grooming routines or health check.
