Question
I have a very young guinea pig that I purchased from a pet store a few days ago, I see that he has some congestion it sounds like. I work at the pet store and we use two different kinds of bedding for our guinea pigs. I use all living things paper bedding and they use carefresh, I have heard that could cause congestion. He is eating and drinking and going to the bathroom fine. I was wondering if there was a at home care I could do?

Answer
Carefresh is a good product, and there's no reason it should cause congestion. If this little pig is truly congested he should have mucous in his nose.

Guinea pigs in general will make a sound when you hold them up to your ear that sounds like congestion, but is not. It's just a normal noise. If he's eating, drinking and is active I wouldn't try to medicate him in any way. Doing so may cause more trouble than leaving him alone.

The best indicator of how a guinea pig feels is their appetite. When they're sick they stop eating. So as long as he's eating, drinking and going potty he is okay.
