Question
Hiya,
Well i bought a guinea pig from a small pet store. The lady said she was a little girl and said she was about 12 week old, she was only small. Got her home and 2 weeks had past and she was gaining weight so i didn't think anything of it. i have had her for 4 weeks now. Then last night, she was screaming so she woke me up and i realised she was giving birth. She gave birth to a one little baby. Is there any advice you could give me to make sure they are both healthy? Thanks

Answer
Hello Sarah,
awww.. I'm so glad she gave birth okay. Can you determine if the baby is a boy or girl? Here is information on sexing the guinea pig. http://www.guinealynx.info/sexing.html
I hope it's a girl because if it's a boy you would have to seperate them at 3-4 weeks.

Basically, the baby is a mini guinea pig and you don't really need to do anything extra. You could lower the water bottle so the baby can get to it. Put a little bit more fruits and veggies in the cage since the baby can eat a little bit. All they really need from mommy is milk and warmth. :) Also since the mommy was pregnant she could use some extra minerals and vitamins. The easiest thing to do is to buy some pedialyte and mix half pedialyte and half water in the water bottle to give extra vitamins and minerals. You can also buy vitamin drops for guinea pigs. My favorite is Oasis vitamin drops at PetSmart because it seems to be really tasty to guinea pigs. :) I hope this helps.
