3 week old guinea pig

Question
I just brought home a 3 week old guinea pig last night. He is doing really well. I was wondering if he needs any special care because he is so young and not with his mother. Any tips would be great!

Answer
Hello,
Guinea pigs should usually be with their mother until about 5-6 weeks so they can suckle from her so unless he goes back with his mother you will need to feed him some extra milk. You can start by putting some bread with warm milk in his cage and you can also heat up milk with a little cream in and feed to him on a spoon about 3-4 times a day and then about 2 times a day. Guinea pigs can start to eat solid food from when they are a few days old so take some of the guineas normal cereal food and crush it up a bit so it is easier for him to eat. Make sure the guinea has access to fresh water all the time and is reasonably warm. You may need to clean his bottom aswell, you need to help stimulate him to defecate, a cotton wool piece dipped in warm water works well. This doesn't have to be carried out after every feed but at least 2-3 times a day.
I hope this helps and please don't hesitate to ask any more questions
