guinea pigs/rabbits

Question
Hello Sam, we have 36 mainly bonded in pairs, rabbits.  They are rescues and are pets indoors.  They live in large homemade pens on floor level.

What I'd like to know is it safe to adopt a couple of guinea pigs and make their pen on floor level too in same room as some of our bunnies?  I've heard now that shouldn't be done as guinea pigs could catch bordatella from rabbits.

I will not adopt any guinea pigs if I can't have them live at least in the same room as the bunnies and play area (I won't be obviously housing the 2 species together).

Thanks for any info.
Paula

Answer
you sound almost as mad as me with that many ; ), well firstly it is nice to hear from someone who clearly is so active in helping resuces. there is a mixed camp in the whole mixing rabbits and guinea pigs and while there are those who feel that guinea pigs can get sick from rabbits I personally have never known illness to spread in that way, and before i kept just guinea pigs i kept both pigs and rabbits in the same shed and they shared a paddock and large aviary together (I alternated the species between the two grounds), while there was one occasion where a rabbit and guinea pig both got head tilt that is an illness that could just as easily have spred between rabbit and rabbit, guinea pig and guinea pig.

in short in my personally opinion, so long as living conditions are clean, it should be absolutely fine
