Question
Hi, we have a young piggy that we've had for 2 weeks now.  She eats hay and her pellets really good but won't eat fresh veggies.  We tried to add vit C drops to her water but she stopped drinking it after we added them.  The veggies we've tried: kale, dark leafy greens, carrots, green and red bell peppers, broccoli....but she just won't eat them however she does love the timothy hay!  So my question's for you are: first, just over the past couple days she has developed a bald spot under one of her eyes the skin is flaky white...could this be not getting enough Vit C?  If she doesn't eat her fresh veggies what do you recommend for Vit C supplements? Second can she be eating too much hay? we have a hanging ball that we fill with hay at least 3 times a day.  I appreciate your time!

Thank You!

Answer
It's not uncommon for a young pig to have never been offered veggies and fruits. They often come through wholesalers who get them from breeders as juniors, so they haven't yet learned to enjoy these things. Don't push the issue just yet. Give her awhile. Offer one small piece of carrot at a time, no more. When giving lettuce, etc. just offer a very small piece.

As for the Vit C drops I'm not surprised she wouldn't drink. It makes the water taste odd and they will back away from it. You should not have to supplement Vit C if you have a good quality pellet. Parsley is an excellent source of Vit C and most pigs (once they've tried it) love it.

The symptoms you describe are not those of Vit C deficiency. She could have a type of ringworm, although I doubt that. You might be best serving her by taking her to a vet for an exam to make sure. But I see or read nothing that indicates Vit C deficiency. It may be just dry skin.
