Question
Hey Matt. I have a question about my piggy, Rocky. I got him on april 23 of this month and he has been doing pretty well. For the first 2 or 3 days i didnt put alot of timothy hay in, but then i finally figured out how to stuff the dispenser and did so.  My piggy started to sneeze around that time. I also have him on a shelf by a window. I know its not a good place, but I have old couch cushions protecting the cage. He keeps on sneezing though. there isnt any discharge from his nose, but he still wipes it sometimes. He drinks normally, and i see him eat all the time. He does run to his igloo like a new piggy should and everything. Im using carefresh bedding too. I dont know what the problem Is though because he keeps sneezing. Do you think I should switch to the bedding the petstore I got him from used? They used softsorbent or something along that name. Also, do guinea pigs get sick from being cold? or is it just that the piggy is unlucky enough to get the bacteria in them? thanks for all the help and sorry for the long post. If i do need to buy him a medicine can i buy it from a store? or do I have to go to the vet and get some expensive medicine?

Answer
A guinea pig can catch a cold from being too cold, so you might want to move him away from the window.  Maybe put him on the floor or something out of sight of a window.

He may be sneezing because he is allergic to the bedding.  I had a guinea pig who just did horribly on carefresh (even though that is the bedding I recommend).  But if it is an allergy to the bedding, you can definitely switch to softsorbent, which is also a very good bedding.

If you switch bedding and nothing seems to improve, I am going to have to say that you will have to deal with the bill and take him to the vet.  I don't take sneezing lightly most of the time, as it can mean there is something wrong.  So after you switch the bedding, give him a couple days, and if nothing seems to improve, call a veterinarian.
