Question -
Hi, I have a few questions for you. My piggie, Wacky, has an skin infection. The vet gave her her Baytril liquid, 1/2 cc daily. Is this safe for her? She doesn't have mites she has been tested for them. This is the second time shes had an skin infection. The vet said she may be mutating some kind of allergy. Have you ever heard of this?

Thank you,
Beth

Answer -
Baytril is safe for guinea pigs, she is actually getting a pretty low dose though if it is 1/2 cc daily, it would be much better to do a subcutanious shot of Baytril, and maybe use a steriod cream such as betamethasone. Mites are the most common skin problem, but if she had a skin scraping that turned out negative then she should be fine, it still wouldn't hurt to give her a shot of Ivermectin though since it gets rid of all parasites. Did anyone recently in your family have ringworm? Ringworm can be transmitted to pigs and cause skin irritation, and it is a fungus so it will not respond to antibiotics because it requires anti-fingal medication. Guinea Pigs rarely have allergic reactions, I have never heard or seen a case before. Hairloss can be from stress, liver disorders, pregnancy, vitamin deficiencies as well as parasitic causes. You could try bathing her in Happy Tails Tar and Sulfur shampoo, it is made for dogs, but is safe for pigs, it helps with skin irritation and dryness, I have used it numerous times for rescues. I know it is available at Tractor Supply Company (TSC) and most major pet stores. You might want to try that and check for ringworm, if ringworm is not a possibility then I would try a shot of Ivermectin, it won't hurt even if she doesn't have mites, you might see the condition clear up with just that. If you have any more questions let me know and I can answer them.

Answer
Your Welcome, I would just try increasing the dose of the Baytril then. Also maybe try the tar and sulfur shampoo to help with any irritation. She could possibly be having a skin reaction to the bedding if you are using pine shavings or cedar, you could then use carefresh or cell-sorb, or the other types of non-wood shaving beddings. I've never heard of this happening, but maybe she could be allergic to alfalfa hay, which is in the pellets, in that case you could switch to a timothy hay based pellet and only use timothy hay. It is really hard to tell, the best thing to do in order to make sure she does not have an allergic reaction would be to make her diet simple, just pellets, water with vitamins and hay, that way everything can be controlled.
